What is confirmed
Capcom’s official table lists the game as swordplay action, one player. The setting is early Edo-period Kyoto twisted by Malice. Miyamoto Musashi fights Genma with an Oni Gauntlet.
Director Satoru Nihei told Automaton the game is not open-world and is not a punishing die-and-retry soulslike. Game Informer quotes him calling it character-action, with an “open-town” Kyoto hub rather than a checklist open world.

The engine is RE Engine. Launch is Friday, 4 September 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Samanosuke is a series name. This revival’s confirmed protagonist is Musashi. There is not enough independent search intent here to split a Samanosuke page.
What is not confirmed
This page does not invent a full move list, skill-tree nodes, or a walkthrough. Steam community tags such as Souls-like are not Capcom’s genre line.
“Beat ‘em up” and “not Wukong” are search phrasings. They are not official genre labels.
Frequently asked questions
Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword open world?
No. Nihei said it is not an open-world game. Official and interview language is linear, then wide-linear / open-town Kyoto.
Is it a beat-em-up or a Wukong clone?
No. Those are search phrasings, not Capcom labels. Official combat is Issen, parry, and deflect in a character-action loop.
